YOUR BOYFRIEND SEES ME AS A THREAT AND I DON’T MIND
I don’t blame him.
If I were him, I’d probably be watching me too.
I walk into the room and suddenly he’s paying attention.
I say nothing and somehow I’m still the topic.
I don’t compete with him.
I don’t have to.
That’s the part that bothers him.
I’m not trying to take his girl.
I’m not trying to prove anything.
I’m simply existing—and apparently that’s enough to make him uncomfortable.
That’s not my insecurity to carry.
He sees me as competition.
I see him as a spectator.
He checks who I am.
He notices what I wear.
He watches where I go.
He wonders what she thinks of me.
Meanwhile, I’m wondering what I’m eating later.
That’s the difference.
I’m not obsessed with being the better man.
I just happen to be very comfortable being myself.
If my confidence makes him nervous,
that’s unfortunate.
If my presence makes him insecure,
that’s unfortunate.
If he thinks I’m a threat—
he’s probably paying closer attention than I am.
I don’t need his girlfriend.
I don’t need his approval.
I don’t need his attention.
But if he wants to keep looking over his shoulder…
I’ll give him something worth looking at.
